Every Type of Keyboard Explained (and Which One Is Right for You)

Membrane, scissor, mechanical, optical, Hall-effect, Topre, split, roll-up and laser projection: all 9 keyboard types explained in plain English, with a quick guide to picking yours.

You’ve typed millions of words in your life, probably on a keyboard you never chose. There are nine real types of keyboard, and most people only know two. Here’s every one, what it feels like, and who it’s for.

The quick answer

If you… Get this
Type all day Mechanical
Have sore wrists Ergonomic split
Play competitive games Hall-effect or optical
Need thin and portable Scissor
Want the best feel money can buy Topre
Are still on the free one from your PC Anything but membrane

1. Membrane

The keyboard that came free with your computer. Under every key is a soft rubber dome that presses a pressure pad. It’s cheap and quiet, but mushy. There’s no real feedback, so your fingers bottom out on every press. Fine for emails, bad for speed.

2. Scissor (laptop keys)

The flat keys on laptops and slim desktop boards. There’s still a rubber dome underneath, but a small scissor mechanism keeps each key level, so presses feel crisp, even and short. It’s the best thin keyboard you can get, but it isn’t built for long typing sessions.

3. Mechanical

The one the internet is obsessed with, for good reason. Every key has its own spring-loaded switch, so you get real feedback, a defined point where the key registers, and a feel you can tune: lighter, heavier, clickier or smoother. They’re rated for 50 million+ presses, the keycaps and switches are swappable, and you can repair them instead of throwing them away.

The trade-offs: they cost more, and they’re louder. Your coworkers will know.

4. Optical

Optical switches look like mechanical ones, but a keypress breaks a tiny beam of light instead of pushing two metal contacts together. With no contacts to wear out and no “bounce” to filter, they register a hair faster and last longer. That’s why a lot of gaming keyboards use them.

5. Hall-effect (magnetic)

The type that’s blowing up right now. A magnet in the switch and a sensor read exactly how far down the key is, all the time. That unlocks two things:

  • Adjustable actuation: you choose how deep a press has to go, feather-light for gaming or deeper for typing.
  • Rapid trigger: the key fires and resets the instant you move, with no fixed travel to wait for.

Competitive gamers are switching to these because it’s a genuine reaction-time edge.

6. Topre (electro-capacitive)

A strange hybrid: a rubber dome plus a spring, read electronically. On paper it sounds basic. In practice it has a deep, soft “thock” with a cult following. A membrane board costs around $15; a Topre board can cost around $300, and fans happily pay it.

7. Ergonomic split

A normal keyboard pushes your hands together and bends your wrists outward. A split board comes in two halves you can spread apart and tilt up, so your forearms, wrists and hands sit in a straight, neutral line. Expect a week or two of slower typing while you adjust. If you type for a living, it’s the one that can save your hands.

8. Flexible (roll-up)

Pure silicone. Roll it up, rinse it off, throw it in a bag. It’s nearly indestructible and nearly unusable for fast typing. A travel gadget more than a daily keyboard, but it survives coffee.

9. Laser projection

No keys at all. A device the size of a lighter projects a keyboard onto any flat surface, and infrared sensors watch your fingers tap the table. It looks like science fiction and types badly: no feedback, and frequent typos. Still, it’s real, it fits in your pocket, and it’s the closest thing to a keyboard from the future.

Which one should you get?

Most people should move up to a mechanical keyboard. If your wrists hurt, look at a split board. Gamers should look at Hall-effect or optical switches. The worst choice is sticking with a mushy membrane out of habit.
